Why they reached out to us

For years, this very busy family wanted to make their openly connected living and family room more functionally and aesthetically cohesive. Being fans of Nicole Curtis and Rehab Addict, they drew inspiration from the look and feel of her designs, especially a fireplace with a black mantel against a white wall. They just didn't know how to begin.

Original Living Room

Fireplace

South-facing window to front yard.

Back wall (opposite wall to fireplace)

A/C duct next to fireplace

What will help this living room be Pretty Easy?

  1. A layout that takes advantage of the fireplace
  2. Custom cabinetry that covers the A/C duct and still allows accessibility.
  3. Custom shelving and cabinetry for storage and display around the fireplace
  4. A seating arrangement that encourages connection
  5. An irresistible reading nook
  6. An updated fireplace mantle (per homeowners' request)
  7. White walls (per homeowners' request)

Original Family Room

Archway joining living room and family room

Entertainment area and archway to hallway and kitchen

Sofa and west-facing window

What will help this family room be Pretty Easy?

  1. A large but properly scaled and extremely comfortable sofa with a view of the tv. This sofa should ideally be able to fit the entire family for movie nights.
  2. A clear pathway between the living room and the kitchen
  3. A visually striking accent wall as it's very visible from the living room
  4. Storage that has a minimal footprint
  5. Places for putting drinks and snacks while watching tv
  6. A soft, durable, and stain forgiving area rug
  7. An inviting space for Izzy's bed

How We Work Together

Phase One

After an in-person, initial consultation, PEL went to the drawing board and created flow plans to help them envision how to set up their space to be functionally more conducive to their routines. We also made mood boards to illustrate how their space might look.

Flow Plans and Mood Boards

Phase Two

After having some time with their flow plans and mood boards, they chose to work off the option B flow plan. They also determined they wanted to see the sofas from Nice & Easy and Pretty Comfy along with anything else that may strike them. PEL accompanied them on a personal shopping trip. Homeowners felt Lovesacs sactionals was the one that best suited them.

Product REsources

Phase Three

We decided together that their project would require some outside professionals. PEL researched and compiled a list of potential contractors, cabinet makers, painters, and fireplace experts that could convert their wood-burning fireplace to gas.

Professionals

Phase Four

Homeowners hit a snag. With their busy schedule they put their plans on hold. Some unforeseen expenses also arose, and they reassessed their priorities. Along with PEL, we devised a plan to move the project forward efficiently and economically. Their next step will be to paint the walls white and fireplace black. This is a relatively quick and inexpensive way to vastly change the feel of the rooms and provide a blank slate for further exploration. PEL recommended white and black paints and finishes. When homeowners have more time in March, they'll set up a meeting with the contractor recommended by PEL. Stay tuned...
